My Story
Welcome!
I'm Hannah, founder of Kalon Herbals. My story, just like anyone else's, could never fit onto one page, but here is a snippet just for the sake of a quick introduction. My life has held many health challenges since I've been 7 years old. The bad is intertwined with the good and it creates a beautiful story of much pain but oh, the grace! The love, the blessings, the laughter and joy are things I need to focus on or my body grows weary and sad to think of all the ‘wasted’ years.
Part of my journey includes being severely sensitive to artificial fragrance and it can be difficult finding good, clean products that don't negatively affect my health. Kalon was created out of that frustration, and I started realizing how many others are affected by fragrance and harsh ingredients. I began studying herbalism and fell deeply in love with it. I spent hours and hours formulating herbal products, creating herbal teas, and just having fun with herbs. Eventually I decided to sell my things and Kalon slowly grew from a little side business to a business that started taking over my life - in a good way. Now I work part time as an herbalist in a little herb shop and part time in my own little herb corner at home, creating and formulating and always, always learning.
Kalon offers a botanical skincare line, with zero preservatives and all organic and non-toxic ingredients. A few haircare products, as well as body oils and scrubs, and an ever-growing selection of herbal tea blends. I am slowly extending my line of slaves and tinctures and various beverage options. Books coming soon!
All Kalon products are free of essential oils and fragrance. Herbs create a pleasant scent and I love extracting scents from flowers, leaves and roots to add an earthy depth to my oils and salves. Herbs are a beautiful gift to work with and they hold so many healing properties. As a Christian herbalist (which is rare) I love the verse from Genesis -
And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. Genesis 1:29
And these verses!
He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth. Psalm 104:14
Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing. Ezekiel 47:12
My vision is this:
- that Jesus Christ would be my guide and the hope of Kalon. Without the Creator, there would be no herbs and I want to remember that each time I work with plants. He is the sustainer of our lives, and He provided wonderful medicine at our fingertips.
- to use herbs in a Christ-honoring way - I am not a witch, I am not a 'spiritual' healer, I am not a healer of any kind. I do not mess with witchcraft or new age of any kind. Herbs are medicinal and I use them only for medicinal purposes.
- that I could shed a light, however small, on women's health. Unfortunately we are not often taught important things about our bodies, like our cycles, emotions, and common hormonal symptoms. Women should know how their bodies work. We deserve more than gong to a doctor and being told birth control will fix all our problems. I am not a doctor, just an herbalist who loves learning and sharing knowledge. I am thankful for western medicine and I am never against drugs and medications: if they are used correctly. Lifestyle and diet should always be the first thing we focus on, but it's not. Western medicine has its time and place but for non life threatening issues, I believe herbs, an ancestral diet, sunlight, laughter, exercise and the Lord is what we really need. Kalon is a small way you can learn more about your cycle, symptoms you experience, and learn simple ways to treat your body holistically.
About me:
I live in beautiful Pennsylvania, in the same area I've lived all my life. I have a love/hate relationship with it because the area is very populated and I don't enjoy that. Even in the countryside, there's lots of hustle and bustle and new buildings and shoppes and traffic lights. I dream of a quieter area and a small farm someday. I adore nature and any chance I get and it's warm enough I'm outside barefoot with the sun in my face. I'm lucky enough to have acres of forest in my backyard and I love walks among the trees. The Lord is a wonderful Creator and His Creation astounds me.
I love traveling: I've only been to four countries so far but I loved each one of them. My favorite places I've been to are Switzerland, Alaska, Hawaii and Canada (specifically the Alaskan Highway. I loved British Columbia!) I love camping, hiking and road trips.
I have the sweetest nieces ever and I love spending time with them. Friendships are important to me but I struggle to maintain more than 2 or 3 close, strong friendships at once. I'm more introverted and could spend all day alone with tea and books. I absolutely love designing and creating. Making this website was a task that so overwhelming and so frustrating but I'm thrilled with end result. My love for green shades, mountains and vintage styles show throughout the whole website and I love it.
Small things I enjoy:
thrifting, making lattes, rain, most shades of green, beeswax candles, herbal tea, puzzles, dog snuggles, a good cotton blanket, the smell of leather, the smell of dirt, plants, leisure walks…
Thank you for being here! I appreciate you so much.
Hannah
